anthems...

we've caught the olympic bug. finally.

it took shaun white and those other delicious little dudes, but we are all in.

yesterday, our second new dishwasher {the first was sleek and pretty, but just entirely too lazy.} was firmly ensconced in its new home. we are thrilled. mostly because this was the final day i'd have to wait around for an installation. those five-hour chunks of wasted time are insane, yes?

then there's the whole explaining to mémé that no, this is not mommy's new friend. so stop telling the neighbors that he is. creepy.

but of the six different friends...i mean, repairman-installer guys...who came to our home, all but one were from somewhere else. ireland, pakistan, puerto rico, mexico, and the philippines.

the funny thing was they all walked through the door and stopped to stare at our walls of photos.

is that venice? yes.

you've been to petra? yes.

is that...? yes. yes. and yes.

and then they'd bring out their phones. show us snaps of their homes and faraway babes. it was always a sweet moment. i like people who love from where they came, don't you?

one of the men hadn't seen his daughter in three years. she was eight. my face scrunched up as i thought of not seeing one of my girlies three in three anythings. it would flatten me.

i think i embarrassed him. i'm nearly sure i did. especially because he shrugged and sort of tried to make me feel better.

it's the american dream, you know?

no. i don't. at least, i didn't. maybe i'd forgotten for a bit.

all of that to tell you this: gold medalists should be singing the heck out of their anthems. this one's my favorite version...

photos of the mast brothers chocolate via the selby. i love how their inspiration is "working with family and friends to make something from scratch that creates happiness." their own site is as delicious as shaun white and his boys.

I agree! The American athletes need to be singing their anthem when they win! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Sorry. I got a little carried away.

I'm dreaming right now.

oh, shaun white. i just wanna hang out with him. what him tossle that mane of red hair. i think he'd be fun to chill with.

last year, my parents had workers install a bathroom in the basement. one of them hadn't seen his family in years. it broke my heart, because you could tell how dearly he missed them and wanted them to be with him. there's so much we need to fix.

my kids have lost count of the times they've heard me say "if the star spangled banner is EVER played for you like that - you better be singing along! 'course, even if it's not 'just for you' - you better be singing anyway."
thankfully, so far, they seem to have inherited my knack for tearing up and getting that certain sort of feeling in my heart each time it is played.

is it just me or does everyone cry when the national anthem plays?

it's probably just me

We moved last Friday, and have been without television until about an hour ago. I spent MY day waiting for the satellite installers to 1) arrive and 2) complete the job. I'm not complaining, though - I got to walk with the dogs through our snowy woods, and then sit surrounded by their warm, sleepy doggie goodness and watch the icicles melt off the porch.

Oh say, can you see?...(yes, if you remember to look!)

xox,
Susan

i was beginning to feel like i was one of the few bloggers actually watching the Olympics! I've been watching since Day 1....may have a lil' something to do with the fact that it's being hosted in Canada and I am Canadian...almost a duty to watch :)

i LOVE curly sue! hadn't seen the movie in ages then caught it on tv a few months ago and watched the entire thing. so cute.

Oh and I totally fell for Shaun White too---with all that red hair of his.....

it's beautiful that once they saw your photos, then they felt safe enough to share their stories of the world with you, to share their families with you.

i don't know what's wrong with me but i can't get into the olympics. i did, however, watch some curling today. that was enjoyable.

I really like when people are expressing their opinion and thought. So I like the way you are writing

YES!! Not only sing their anthems, but put their hands over their hearts. OK, only the Americans need to do this. Did you see the American girls take gold and bronze in the moguls? OK, I know you didn't because that was early on in the Olympics. Anyway, I was all teary because Shannon Bahrke, the bronze medalist, was smiling SO BIG and singing her heart out. Just belting out her anthem. So proud. It was a beautiful thing.

And when Alexandre Bilodeau won the first Canadian home gold? The medal ceremony was electric. You could hear the entire crowd swelling the place with their voices, singing their anthem. I still get chocked up thinking about it.

I don't like Shaun White. My son is entirely too interested in those little tricks he does and all I see is DANGER WILL ROBINSON! No, I don't like him at all.

(just kidding, of course.)

(sort of.)

(Yes, definitely kidding.)

i hear it over and over again...americans do not understand how amazing this country of ours truly is...i have to say sometimes it takes moments like yours or amazing olympic-shaun-white moments to make me want to belt out our beloved anthem...thanks for the reminder dear one. xo t
